Technology Could Make People With Dementia Happier

Technology Can Help Improve the Mood of Those With Dementia

Technology is a part of our lives. It has a bad reputation. The moment you clicked on this article you were probably expecting it to be all bad! There are positive aspects to what we consider a terrible intrusion in our lives. Furthermore, its damages to health are considerable.

In the news, it is blamed for the loneliness epidemic. It has caused problems with distraction. Our common conversations are interrupted by cell phone usage. However, what if I were to tell you that technology has a benefit? What if technology could be used in the right way? There are positives to technology usage especially for dementia patients.

Without a doubt, you might be asking how can technology improve the mood of people with dementia. Despite its flaws, technology offers an outlet for seniors. It can distract them from their current state. For anyone who has cared for a senior with dementia, negative moods like confusion, anger, and sadness are common.

What Research Says

In recent research studies, YouTube was associated with positive moods. According to a mobile company, screen time spent looking at photos, listening to music, or watching videos on YouTube can improve moods drastically. Researchers see this as an alternative to medication. The vast majority of people benefit from tablet sessions.

Aaron Gilson is a health policy researcher with the UW School of Pharmacy who comments on technology usage for patients with dementia. Patients who live in nursing homes and home care are encouraged to use tablets. This is because eighty percent of the care recipients showed significant improvement to their negative mood. Patients can view family photos, playing their favorite music, and following topics they are interested in. Coincidentally, it’s not secret that more people are discovering the wonders of technology for their loved ones.

Final Thoughts

Technology used correctly can enrich someone’s life. It brings families together closer. Dementia patients use visuals like photos and videos to distract themselves from their debilitating disease. Additionally, it engages their brain with positive associations. Patients with dementia enjoy a significant mood boost.

Tips on How to Help Parents with Cancer

The word cancer is a scary word for anyone. How can you begin to take care of someone else with cancer let alone a parent? It is the worst feeling in the world hearing that someone you love has cancer. The main reason is because we see our parents as our strength. Nevertheless, some families are caught off guard by this disease.

As overwhelming as it may be, here are tips that you can use to help your parent cope through their disease.

Get Home Care Assistance

The worst mistake that most families make is putting the burden and responsibility on themselves. Home care assistance can provide the sense of comfort your loved one makes. Going back and forth from the hospital, can be time consuming. We want to make sure our parents are well taken care of, yet this constant struggle can effect families emotionally. Families don’t need to do this alone.

Treat Them to Things They Love

It is the smaller things that make a big difference. If your mother or father are battling cancer, treat them to things they love like a manicure or a massage. These small pleasures can make a difference. Your parents will cherish the effort too. This is a perfect time to spend time together. There is nothing more important than enjoying the time together.

Be Patient

Patience is a virtue. It is easier said than done. Being patient, is valuable. You may have good days and bad days. It is important to remember that it is your parent going through this difficult crisis. They may not always be themselves or act out in frustration. However, is vital to keep a level head for them and show them they have your support.

Give Them a Distraction

Chemo treatments and surgery recover can create free time. For parents, try buying them a portable DVD player or a hand held device to help them pass the time. Furthermore, if they are far away, show them how to utilize apps like Whatsapp on their mobile devices to keep in contact. During your visiting time with your parents, spend time with them doing what they enjoy.

A Support System is A Definite

Loving your parent comes naturally. Your priority may feel like caring for them needs one-hundred percent of your focus. However, don’t forget about your needs. If you need to cry, let it out. If your are upset, take the time to heal. You need your friends and family to be there during your darkest hours.

Cancer is a horrible disease. These short tips will give some relief. It’s impossible to explain the hardship it puts on families. It doesn’t need to be the end though. Being positive and utilizing the support systems that are in place, will get your family through the tough times.

Remembrance 9-11-2001

Where were you on this day? For some, it was an amazing day filled with opportunities. For others, they barely remember it. Those born after 9/11 look at images in history books and ponder at the tragedy. Finally, for many others, it was the last day they would see their loved one or walk on this earth.

The experiences of that day are different for everyone. It provokes a sense of mystery behind why thousands had lost their lives in a span of a couple of hours. However, the dark message is the same. Tragedy can rattle our hearts. It can make us feel unsafe. We may be numb to the pain. As cliche as it seems, it is important to not take things for granted and always appreciate what is around you.

Today is a day of remembrance. It was eighteen years ago that 3000 people lost their lives. While some of us don’t want to think about the tragedy, it is a sign of love and respect for those who lost their lives. The best thing we can do is to continue to do our best in this life while supporting those in need. 9/11 was a day that brought the nation together in the midst of chaos.

Nevertheless, it is days like these that we give thanks to another day. Their souls will forever be in our memories.

E & S Family shows its respect and remembrance for the tragedy that happened. Our hearts are with the families who continue to suffer to this day. Though we cannot repair what happened, we can hope to bring a little bit of light to the darkness of the day.

Why Home Care Options are Important

Since the emergence of Obamacare, the home care sector boomed. With more access to health care options, it’s no secret that home care became the number one choice for elderly and disabled Americans. In comparison to other options, home care services provide Americans the choice to stay home.

Home Care services provide comfort to clients and families alike. Additionally, choices give families the ability to find the perfect peace of mind.

Families Have Options for Care

Families have several options when choosing a care plan for their loved one. These options include nursing homes or assisted living facilities. There is one problem with this option. It comes at a cost. Your loved one may not receive the care they need.

I am a firm believer that families should have as many options as possible for their care needs. The more care need options there are the more likely a family will find what works for them.

Home Care Is a Reliable Choice

I work as a director at a vocational school that trains and educates Nurse Aides. Despite their best intentions, most often the human resource teams at nursing homes are faced with a dilemma. They have the members at their home, but not enough nurse aides to stabilize the care at their facilities.

Nursing Homes are Under Staffed

Nursing homes provide an important piece to the puzzle. However, they face challenges. As someone in charge of a Vocational School, nursing homes are often understaffed and cannot provide the quality their patients deserve.

It is a sad, but true reality for nursing homes. The main reason they are understaffed is because nurse aides are hard to staff. Nevertheless, home care agencies may encounter a similar situation with home health aides.

The main difference though is that home health aides may work for more than one agency. Furthermore, home care attendants provide a personal care assistance that nursing homes cannot give. Essentially, people who are in the home care service industry are passionate about what they do.
