3 Short and Interesting Facts About Aging

Facts About Aging

It is a conversation people do not talk about. After my initial research, I found three interesting facts about aging.

  1. You Can Live 7.5 Years More With Proper Care: People with accurate perception of aging can expect to live 7 an a half years longer. In conclusion, people who understand their personal needs as they age will live longer. For instance, hiring a home health aide limits time spent at the hospital or unnecessary, preventable injuries.
  2. People Are Happiest Towards the End of Their Lives: People worry less towards the end of their lives. Furthermore, older people have established incomes and most often retirement. Additionally, seniors value their time and resources.
  3. Life is Better with Companionship: In the United States, only 3.6% of people over 65 years old are in nursing homes. Seniors prefer living at home with a companion or a home health aide.

3 Things to Consider When Hiring a Home Health Aide

3 Things to Consider Home Health Aide

For the past several years, home care is the number one job creator in the United States. Health care continues to grow.

The reports show that home care services are in-demand. In the first place, home care provides an option. It gives people the choice to stay at home.

However, when searching for in-home care for yourself or an aging family member, there are three recommendations we give families.

#1. You’re Responsible Unless You Find An Agency

You are responsible for the home health aide. Agencies prevent problems from occurring.

Typical problems include:

  1. Being unable to screen properly
  2. Finding a replacement
  3. Liability problems

Furthermore, there is no peace of mind or liability problems. Agencies give a peace of mind. For instance, if an agency caregiver is accused of stealing, the agency will handle the fallout.

#2. It Takes Time

A busy work schedule is hard to work around. For most adults, their time is limited. Home care agencies do the work for you. In the light of hiring a home health aide, it takes time to screen them. Not to mention, the choices may be limited.

Home health aides prefer working with agencies to prevent problems too.

#3. Research

Of course, research is another element of home care services. Home care agencies research their candidates. At the same time, agencies may train their home health aides to ensure quality services.

Live-in home care services rely on home health caregivers to be checked and certified to handle situations.

There are 3 things you should consider when hiring a home health aide.

These 3 things to consider are the tips we give families.

2 Big Reasons Your Parent Needs a Home Health Aide

Parent Needs a Home Health Aide

Everyone wants to do what is best for their aging parents. There are millions of articles that provide thousands of reasons your parents need a home health aide. I will make this short, sweet, and to the point as to two big reasons your parent needs a home health aide.

  1. Emotional Well Being
  2. Reliability

Before I explain these two, let me explain what the issue is today.

Elderly Care is a Major Issue

Elderly care is a major issue in today’s society. According to the United States Census Bureau, for the first time in U.S History, older people are projected to outnumber children.

In the next ten years, 2030 will be the demographic turning point in the U.S. Baby boomers will be over the age of 65. In addition, this will expand the size of the older population that 1 in 5 resides will be retirement age.

What this means to everyone else is that families will be affected. This will result in the demand for health care to grow stronger.

A fact about the baby boomer generation is that they prefer to be independent. Care at home services are the future. Hospitals will be unable to handle the mass increase in patient care. For this reason, doctors and physicals are turning to home health aide services.

However, it can be hard to know when it is the right time to hire extra help. I decided to write a simple summary of two big reasons your parent needs a home health aide.

Reason #1: Emotional Well-Being

It is an emotional roller coaster. Whether you plan on becoming a caregiver gradually or you are thrown into it due to a crisis, it brings an emotional responsibility.

The love that you have for your parents is not he same as taking care of your emotional well-being.

Do you remember the times your parent dealt with your tantrums? Your parents loved you. Maybe they yelled at you, took away your favorite toy, but for the most part, our parents never crossed the line.

Actually, most parents will adore their kids until the day they pass, but it is a draining situation that, if not dealt with, can produce problems later down the road. You being a caregiver for your loved one or passing them off to a nursing home will produce thousands of emotions.

I created a chart of our major emotions you will experience.

Emotions you may feel over time include:

A home health aide goes through the emotional training and understand the expectations of caring for a loved one with needs.

Reason #2: Reliability

I will paint a scenario for you. The average adult person between the ages of thirties and forties may work 40-hours per week.

Furthermore, may have children to care for. The average hours per day parents spend caring for and helping household children from ages to 6 to 17 can vary between 2 hours to 4 hours.

These are average responsibilities of an adult. This may be more or less. Nevertheless, if we add care giving to the mix, you will understand the impact it will have.

The average senior may require 5-10 hours of care per day and some may require 24-hour care that involves around-the-clock attention.

The help a senior typically requires includes:

  • Medication Assistance
  • Dressing
  • Bathing
  • Clothing
  • Lifting properly
  • Taking to doctor appointments

The average care a senior needs in the form of a chart:

This is a day to day comparison of what a senior may need when being cared for.

Your day would be gone. It is at this moment most kids looking after their parents may feel guilt. You feel guilty because you shouldn’t see it as a burden or a problem. What are the chances of you sticking to the routine? How reliable will you be?

My answer is mistakes can happen when someone is under heavy amounts of stress.

You’d be facing a situation where you’d either burn out or cause more harm to your parents.

The training caregivers undertake is extensive and sometimes you may not be the right person to care for your parent as hard as that may seem. Your aging parents’ need patience, acceptance, and time. This is where home care services.

You can bring help to your home. It doesn’t need to be a hard transition for you or your parents. Additionally, they’ll be able to stay at home without you worrying or feeling guilty that you left them at a nursing home. It is a win, win, and win situation for everyone.

What To Do From Here

The truth is it there are good ways to handle situations, but then there are better ways.

A home health aide is a help at home service where a specialized person understand what your parent needs. This is what a home health aide does for a living.
